Export insurance extension for cars awaiting Belgian registration

The Belgian steps sometimes take longer than 14 days. Extend your export insurance online by WhatsApp, e-mail or the form: 14 days at a time, after the insurer agrees, from €120. You only pay once we confirm, and the new Green Card usually arrives within 15 minutes of payment.

  • Extend online, no desk visit needed
  • Pay only after confirmation
  • Also if insured elsewhere

from €120 per 14 days

Car with white Dutch export plates, ready for the export drive to Belgium
Complete export package for Belgium: registration certificate part II, Green Card and two white export plates
RDW Erkend bedrijf logo: Auto Export België is an RDW-approved export company

You've exported the car and driven it to Belgium, and now you're waiting: for the E705 validation, an appointment at the inspection centre, a validation or individual approval, or the DIV. Meanwhile your 14-day export insurance is running out. You can extend it without visiting our desk.

Green Card and white export plates: extending your export insurance with Auto Export België
With an extension you receive a new Green Card, also as a PDF by email.

When to extend the export insurance

Typical reasons to extend while the car is being registered:

  • the E705 vignette has not been validated yet;
  • the inspection centre has no appointment available in time;
  • the vehicle needs a validation or individual approval, for example because the WVTA number is not in field K or K1;
  • the CoC is still on its way;
  • the DIV registration is pending;
  • transport is delayed, or the buyer isn't ready yet.

Apply before the current cover ends, so the new cover follows on directly.

How the insurance extension works, step by step

  1. You send the request by WhatsApp, e-mail or the form on this page.
  2. We check it and ask the insurer for approval.
  3. We confirm the approval and the price.
  4. You pay by bank transfer.
  5. You receive the new insurance certificate with Green Card by e-mail, usually within 15 minutes of payment, including a PDF.

If the insurer doesn't agree, you pay nothing. Each extension adds 14 days, and you can extend more than once, each time after the insurer agrees. The price is from €120 per extension; heavy or unusual vehicles can cost more, and we confirm the price in advance. For several vehicles or a long-term business relationship, a discount is sometimes possible, always agreed beforehand.

This also works if your current export insurance was taken out elsewhere: we can extend it with follow-on cover, after the insurer agrees. You can also come to our desk in Hengelo, where the Green Card document is usually ready within 15 minutes.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Information we need for a new Green Card

  • the registration number;
  • the current Green Card or policy (photo or PDF);
  • the end date of the current cover;
  • the country where the vehicle is now and the destination;
  • the details of the policyholder and the driver.

The form has no upload field. Use the WhatsApp button next to the form for photos and documents, or send them by e-mail.

Export cover already expired

You can still extend, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, and again only after the insurer agrees. But between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is not insured and may not be driven. That's why we advise applying in time.

What an extension does not change: plates and APK

The extension is about insurance only. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration and never longer than the APK is valid (RDW); that stays the same, and the export registration itself is not extended. If the car is still in the Netherlands when those 14 days are over, it can only travel on a trailer or transporter. The policy and the Green Card determine in which countries and for which driver you are insured.

Using the car in Belgium after the first 14 days

Once the car is across the border, Belgian rules apply, and the RDW points out that the rules for a Dutch export plate vary from country to country. The Flemish government allows the trip in on temporary plates from the country of purchase; after arrival, according to a ruling of the Court of Appeal in Ghent, only journeys for the formalities may be made. Whether you may still drive on export plates in Belgium after the first 14 days is something to check in advance. Keep to trips for the inspection and the registration. The steps are explained on our page about registering a car in Belgium, the plate rules on Dutch export plates, and the cover itself on export insurance for Belgium.

Export cover extensions in Belgium: what customers ask

How often can I extend while waiting for the DIV registration?

As often as needed, 14 days at a time, as long as the insurer agrees each time. Approval is never automatic, so apply before the current cover ends.

Can you extend export insurance taken out with another company?

Yes. We can extend the cover by 14 days with follow-on insurance, after the insurer agrees. Send us the current Green Card or policy and its end date.

Do I pay before the insurer approves the extra cover for Belgium?

No. You pay only after we have confirmed the insurer's approval and the price. Payment is by bank transfer, and the new Green Card then usually arrives by e-mail within 15 minutes.

Does extending the insurance also extend my export plates in Belgium?

No. Export plates allow 14 days on Dutch roads after deregistration and never longer than the APK. Whether you may still drive on them in Belgium after the first 14 days is something to check in advance.

My cover ended yesterday. Can I still extend?

Yes, that is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK or technical inspection, and after the insurer agrees. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle is uninsured and may not be driven.
